Scaling the Prime Video audio/video monitoring service.

I joined the Video Quality Analysis team at Prime Video, we were tasked with detecting defects in captured content and real-time live streams. We were split into three focus areas, one on input and capture devices, another on detection algorithms and the team I worked with handled services, infrastructure and integration.

When I joined the team had recently completed work on a proof of concept with basic detection capabilities and were looking to scale the service while significantly reducing cost. The ability to operate at scale and at a reduced cost were critical to the success of the service and the team.

I really enjoyed working on this project, particularly influencing the re-architecture of the system and implementing significant parts of it whilst also having the opportunity to learn about an area I was less familiar with, audio/video stream processing. My colleague Marcin Kolny published a detailed write up if you’re interested in more details.

"Chris was a main contributor on a project for scaling up our service and making it more resilient, driving some of the design discussions and coaching more junior engineers. I was impressed by him taking more ownership and responsibility just after joining Amazon, becoming quickly one of the key contributor in the team of 20+ members."
